Commercial Dance

Technique. Versatility. Performance.

Commercial Dance is not a single dance style. And it is certainly not simply any choreography set to a popular song.

It is a professional performance field that operates where dance meets the music industry, live performance and the moving image: concerts and artist tours, music videos, television, film, advertising and live productions.

Because every production requires a different visual and movement language, a Commercial dancer must be able to move between styles, absorb choreographic material quickly, respond precisely to direction and sustain a strong presence both on stage and on camera.

Commercial Dance draws on jazz, Hip Hop and street styles, contemporary dance, musical theatre and other movement languages according to the needs of each production. It does not replace these forms or disregard their origins. It requires an understanding of their foundations and the ability to move consciously from one aesthetic language to another.

A popular track, a particular styling choice or a sequence of striking poses may form part of a Commercial production. On their own, however, they do not constitute Commercial Dance training.

How we train at LOAD

Each class follows a clear structure and is not limited to memorising a routine:

  • Technical preparation: alignment, weight transfer, coordination, isolations, body control and dynamics.

  • Foundations and stylistic vocabulary: studying fundamental principles and understanding the movement origins of each element.

  • Pick-up and retention: developing learning speed, memory, precision and clarity of execution.

  • Musicality and quality shifts: responding to rhythm, lyrics, musical detail and changes in energy.

  • Performance for stage and camera: intention, focus, projection and an understanding of space, ensemble and frame.

Students are trained to serve different choreographic directions without losing their individual identity. They learn to adapt, collaborate, perform consistently and understand the particular demands of different performance environments.

A Commercial dancer is not someone who simply looks “commercial”. It is a dancer with the technical foundation, awareness, versatility and presence required to transform choreographic direction into a complete performance.
